Choosing the Right Outfit

The goal is to choose clothing that reflects your personal style while still being appropriate for your professional field. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

- Keep it Simple: Solid colors tend to work best, as they don’t distract from your face. Neutral tones like navy, black, grey, and white are always safe bets.

- Avoid Busy/Contrasting Patterns: Large prints or busy patterns can overwhelm the photo and take the focus away from your face.

- Fit Matters: Choose outfits that fit well and make you feel comfortable.

- Attract your client: Consider the message you want to convey. If you’re in a creative industry, you might choose something more stylish or casual.

- Bring Options: It’s a good idea to bring a few different tops or jackets to your session. This way, we can explore different looks and see what works best in front of the camera.

Makeup and Grooming Tips

Your headshot should reflect your best, natural self, so makeup and grooming play a key role. The goal is to look like you, but the best, scrubbed up version of you! This doesn't mean deciding to cut your hair, shave your beard or try out contouring for the first time before the shoot! If you wear makeup, opt for natural, clean makeup that evens out your skin tone and highlights your best features. Avoid things that aren't a part of your everyday look. Even if you don't normally wear makeup, a light dusting of powder can reduce shine, and a bit of concealer can cover any blemishes

- Hair: Style your hair in a way that feels authentic to you. Whether you prefer it up or down, make sure it’s neat. A quick touch-up just before your session can help tame any flyaways or add volume where needed. A clean shave or if facial hair is part of your look, a neatly trimmed beard is essential.

- Hydrate and Rest: Drinking plenty of water and getting a good night’s sleep before your session can can make all the difference, helping you look fresh and vibrant.

Practicing Poses

Feeling comfortable in front of the camera often comes down to practice. Spend some time in front of a mirror experimenting with different expressions and angles. Here are a few tips:

- Relax Your Face: Start with a gentle smile or a serious, confident expression. Practice transitioning between the two to see what feels most natural.

- Find Your Best Angle: Most people have a side they prefer. Tilt your head slightly to one side or the other to see what flatters your features.

- Posture Matters: Stand or sit up straight with your shoulders back. Good posture can make a big difference in how you appear in photos.

Selecting the Right Background

The background you choose for your headshot plays a crucial role in setting the overall tone of your image:

- Neutral Backdrops: A solid color background, such as white, grey, or black, is a classic choice that keeps the focus entirely on you. It’s versatile and works well for most professional settings.

- Environmental Backgrounds: If you want something a bit more personal, consider an environmental background, like your workplace or an outdoor setting. These can add context and personality to your photo while still keeping the focus on you.

- Consistency: If you’re planning to use your headshot across multiple platforms, think about where it will appear. Consistency in your background can help create a cohesive personal brand.

Preparing for your first headshot session doesn’t have to be stressful. By following these tips you’ll be well on your way to capturing a headshot that represents the best version of you.
