Marketing and advertising seem like essential components of building a successful personal brand or business. However, most of us find it challenging to overcome the "ick" factor and the awkwardness associated with self-promotion online. It’s the most normal thing in the world to feel uneasy about putting yourself out there. But in order to get ourselves out there and visible it might just have to be something we get used to. But how? I believe as someone with lived experience of overcoming the ick that by embracing authenticity and adopting a strategic mindset, you can conquer these barriers and effectively market yourself online. In this blog, I will explore some of the strategies I used to help you get over the ick and awkwardness of marketing and advertising yourself online.
Understand the Power of Personal Branding:
Developing a personal brand is all about authentically showcasing your unique skills, experiences, and personality. Embrace the fact that marketing yourself is not about being boastful or salesy; it's about confidently sharing what makes you special and how you can add value to your target audience. Remember, your personal brand is an opportunity to connect with others who resonate with your story and offerings.
Shift Your Mindset:
Instead of viewing self-promotion as an awkward or uncomfortable task, reframe it as an opportunity for growth and connection. Recognize that by sharing your expertise, insights, and achievements, you are providing value to others. Focus on the positive impact you can have on your audience's lives and the potential relationships you can foster.
Embrace Authenticity:
One of the most effective ways to overcome the awkwardness of self-promotion is to be authentic. Be true to yourself and your values while crafting your online presence. Share your journey, your challenges, and your successes. People are drawn to authenticity, so let your true self shine through your content, whether it's in blog posts, social media updates, or videos.
Utilize Different Platforms:
Experiment with various online platforms to find the ones that align best with your personal brand and target audience. Whether it's blogging, social media, podcasts, or video platforms, explore different mediums that allow you to showcase your expertise and engage with your audience authentically. Choose platforms that you feel comfortable using and that resonate with your personal style.
Practice, Adapt, and Learn:
Becoming comfortable with self-promotion online is a journey that requires practice, adaptation, and continuous learning. Start small, take consistent action, and gradually expand your comfort zone. Monitor the performance of your marketing efforts, analyze feedback, and make adjustments accordingly. As you gain experience and see positive results, the ick factor will diminish.
