The Art of Repurposing: How to Make Content Creation More Sustainable

Emily Graham

Anyone who uses social media for business promotion will tell you that content creation is the bane of their existence. Let's be honest, we all have more important things to do, but we also know that advertising is essential for running a successful business. Coming up with completely new content is not only difficult but actually not sustainable. Recycling is the way forward. In the past, whenever I thought about sharing the same content multiple times, I hesitated, thinking, “I’ve already posted this—what if people notice and see me as lazy or inauthentic?”. But, repurposing your previous work is one of the most effective strategies for expanding your reach and driving engagement. So, let me share what I’ve learned about why repurposing works, and how it can help you grow without feeling like you’re just repeating yourself.

The Misconception: "I Can’t Post This Again"

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the fear of reposting content is based on a misconception. Like many others, I used to worry that if I shared the same image or post again, my audience would recognise it and lose interest. I was concerned people would think I had run out of new ideas or that I wasn’t being genuine in my content creation.

But here’s the truth: most of your audience isn’t seeing your content the first time around. Social media algorithms are designed to show posts to only a small percentage of your followers. So, even your most engaged followers may not have seen your post the first time it went live. By repurposing content, you’re actually giving more people the chance to discover your work.

Why Repurposing is a Game-Changer

Repurposing isn’t just about reposting the same thing—it’s about creatively adapting your content to fit different platforms and formats. This is where repurposing becomes a powerful tool. What might have worked as a blog post could also become an Instagram carousel or a quick video snippet on TikTok. A simple reframe or a new caption can put new life into something that has already performed well.

For instance, I’ve learned that taking a piece of content that resonated with my audience in one format, and then reshaping it to fit a different platform, opens up new opportunities. It’s not just a time-saver—it’s a strategy to engage new followers who may have missed it the first time.

How I’ve Started Repurposing Content

1. Purposeful Repurposing

Instead of merely reposting the same material, consider how you can present it from a fresh angle. Here are some ideas:

  • Modify the Caption: When promoting a service on Instagram, streamline your process by reworking the opening lines of your existing caption instead of starting from scratch. This allows you to maintain the essence of your original message while making it fresh and relevant for your new post. This saves you time and keeps your content cohesive.

  • Transform Formats: Convert an image into a video. This could involve creating a slideshow or a time-lapse that showcases the process behind the image, adding depth and engagement.

  • Break Down Long Content: If you have a lengthy blog post, consider splitting it into bite-sized pieces. Create a series of concise social media tips that encapsulate the main points, making it easier for your audience to digest and engage with.

2. Stagger Your Timing

Another valuable strategy I've discovered is to stagger the timing of your content repurposing. If you shared something six months ago, don’t hesitate to reintroduce it now.

  • New Audience Exposure: Your audience may have changed since you first posted. Reintroducing content allows new followers to engage with material they might have missed.

  • Different Platforms: Sharing the same content on different platforms can reach varied demographics. For instance, a post that performed well on Instagram might resonate differently on LinkedIn.

  • Fresh Presentation: When you showcase the content differently—whether through a new format, angle, or timing—it feels fresh and relevant, even if the core message remains the same.

Takeaway

The biggest thing I’ve learned is that repurposing content is a smart and effective strategy. It’s not about being lazy or unoriginal—it’s about maximizing your efforts and ensuring your work reaches as many people as possible. Remember, most of your audience isn’t seeing your content as often as you think, and repurposing gives you the chance to expand your reach, engage new followers, and ultimately grow your business.
